Cirque du Soleil creates new theatrical division

After the flop that was Banana Shpeel Cirque still seems to be interested in going into theatre:

"Cirque du Soleil just announced the creation of a new division, Cirque du Soleil Theatrical. Scott Zeiger, co-founding partner of Base Entertainment, will serve as President and Managing Director of the new division. Zeiger will develop unique theatrical opportunities for Cirque du Soleil. Based on traditional theatrical practices, these new productions will be created using the Cirque du Soleil signature style and aesthetic but will provide a very different experience for Cirque du Soleil audiences. This new division will be based in New York City and will continue to promote Cirque du Soleil’s on-going strategy of diversifying its content and live-entertainment activities worldwide.“

Its seems like a good idea to me. The ides is probably to prevent another Banana Schpeel from happening again. With someone on the 'inside' of the theatre industry, they would have someone that understands those audiences better and will help lead Cirque in the right way to make a show that should work better.

I absolutely love this. I've been waiting to see if they would play on Broadway, West End, and Broadway touring venues anytime soon, since Pippin opened on Broadway last year. Pippin had the right blend of theatrics, acrobatics, dancing, and music, and it sure is a true hit. I wonder if they will be reaching out to Broadway composers for these productions. I'd love to hear Stephen Schwartz compose something for them.

Cirque already tried this and Banana Shpeel was a huge fail. They lost a load of money and reputation. And now they want to go back? I don't feel they should start to experiment right now. Cirque should better stick to their kind of game and create awesome shows like Quidam or Varekai again.

Inside sources say that the Cirque du Soleil website is being reformed to add the "Cirque du soleil Theatrical" version as well.

I'm interested to see where they go with this. I really think Cirque could do well with touring shows in Broadway style theaters. The shows have to be good of course though.

I think the Cirque take on vaudeville that Banana Shpeel tried to do really does have potential. BS was just such a terribly executed show in every way, shape, and form on its self. I don't think that means that the concept can't ever work.

I honestly think that Cirque du Soleil reconsidered this decision of having the Theatrical Division due to the Success of Pippin on Broadway with one of her former Directors Diane Paulus and Cirque wants a slice of that Pie that so far belongs to Les 7 doigts de la main.

If you get the right team and creators for a theatrical and acrobatic experience like Pippin did, It can work cause the Audience Loves it. I Just hope they dont bring back people that dont have the right vision for the upcoming projects like they did with David Shiner. Diane Paulus should be invited to be one of the main creatives or Directors of this new Division, thats my pick so far.

No idea how legitimate this is not who posted it but I found this "Another successor for the Broadway revival production (of Cats) will be a national tour production of this musical, which will apparently be produced by Cirque du Soleil, and will be launched on tour on the same date which the film is released." Taken from the Cats (musical) wiki page.
