JOEL exclusively for Russia

Have you heard about JOEL, a brand new show coming this winter and designed specifically for Russia?

Some images reminds me of Wintuk...

Sounds cool, but isn't it too close to Varekai's dates?

This reminds me of one of the more extravagant Cirque Events / 45 Degrees shows I saw they put on.

It's directed by Fernand Rainville, who was also responsible for the artistic direction of the opening ceremonies of the Outgames at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in 2006 ("Circle"), he was co-director for the opening ceremony of the Montreal 2005 – XI FINA World Championships ("Reflections in Blue"), Director of the Cirque du Soleil pre-game show at the 2007 Miami Superbowl ("One Day, One Game, One Dream"), as well as Director of Wintuk (which is no doubt why this has a Wintuk vibe).

Found a press release on the CDS.ru site about JOEL - it's a 45 Degrees Production.

Maybe that's why none of us had heard of it until only a few months before the premiere? I find it pretty weird that none of us had heard of any plans in Russia, and then all of a sudden a page for a permanent show is up. No announcements, nothing!

It doesn't look like a permanent production. It's more of a special winter event. Right now it's only showing from January 2nd through 10th, 2016. It might extend, but it looks nothing more than a Le Monde est Fou type of limited event. The set design renderings (which you can see here: http://www.cds-show.ru/joel/show/setdesign) makes it look very eventish and very limited).

This looks cool, but it's kind of the same acts as in the other 45 Degrees Shows. i.e. Wall Trampoline, Aerial Staps...

"Winter" has become a very tedious theme to me. I know winter Olympic opening ceremonies don't have many other cards to play with when staging things, but you'd think a place like Russia, where they have winter for most of their year, would not want to be reminded of more winter.

La Nouba, Corteo, Delirium, Ovo, Quidam, Totem, Saltimbanco, Immortal, Amaluna.

Trickster: Yeah, I saw the trampoline wall and rolled my eyes.

Colton: I guess this allows them to recycle Wintuk elements and make an "exclusive" show for Moscow.

I kind of rolled my eyes at the description of the show's story too. Gee, we've had how many Cirque productions that have an everyman main character looking for love?

But wait - this time it's the Snow Maiden! (I think, translation was a little wonky...) ;)

I went on google translate and had to tweak the translation quite a lot, not sure if any of you guys know Russian and so can correct me but this is what I interpreted the plot as...

"JOEL is inspired by the traditions of the Russian New Year and follows the Snow Maiden in a snow-shrouded, enchanting world where a myriad of cooler stars will point her way to finding love. Imagine a bustling metropolis a few hours before the New Year; the incessant hustle and bustle; glittering lights windows; singing all over the city; and the huge traffic jams and pedestrians hurrying in all directions. Many of them no longer believe in miracles, and for many years have seen the visiting Santa Claus as someone in the next room absently fiddling with a false beard, but not her ... Fascinating beautiful, brave and stylish, this evening she hurries home and is resolutely rushing on the snowy street, when she stumbles on one of the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Snow. He stretches out his hand to this young beauty on this New Year's Eve and opens the door to the incredible world of JOEL"

I know this is super silly, but is the name pronounced "joll" or "joe-ell"? I like the second pronunciation better.

It's pronounced "yule" apparently, which sounds a lot better than a show named after a person's name.

Haha Colton, I was literally just going to post that!
As far as I can see, the following acts are in it:
Solo ariel hoop, some kind of martial arts, duo aerial sphere (two aerial hoops joined at right angles to form a dome), puppets, ladder, and trampoline wall

I get this is a temporary show, barely, more like an event, but am I the only one feeling that trampoline wall is starting to get overused now. Although I know that not many shows have it in reality, it's a generic act which imo shouldn't be copied and pasted everywhere because it's pretty stock standard.

It is wayyy overused! It used to be the special element of la nouba and te wow factor is gone for sure. Pretty much every special event/45 degree show has it so it is no longer unique, or above expectation.

But do 45 Degree events really count? Aren't they just some ho hum quick fix? I'm fine with Cirque dumping acts like this into these insignificant productions. Save the real acts for the real shows Cirque creates.

Problem is the lines between 45 DEGREES and regular Creations Meandres (the core) Cirque stuff are becoming blurrier and blurrier. Take JOYA for instance - it's a high-profile show branded to Cirque du Soleil, but it was developed, designed, and produced by 45 DEGREES. JOEL is another higher-profile event/show that is being branded CDS (Allavita was too), but is 45 DEGREES. The shows on the cruise ships will be 45 DEG, the show at that French theme park is 45 Degrees. So while the trampo-wall was good for corporate events, special appearances, and other smaller things... it being used in higher profile 45 Degrees thing is starting to be like Cyr Wheel in every show kind of a thing... IMO, of course.

The stuff I saw in this video was: Unicycle, juggling, puppets, ladder, tramp wall, dance sequence and possibly role bola at 0:37 (or maybe its just a swing)

Based on this and rehearsal photos, it seem we're looking at: hoop manipulation (Elena Lev style), aerial hoop (Varekai style), rola bola (Kurios style), Aerial Straps, Korean Plank, Unicycle (girl/girls?), Ladder, Diabolos (a trio), Handbalancing (on some kind of split wooden cane structure), Juggling (lighted balls and also clubs), Trampo Wall, and Aerial Cross Wheel. All with puppets.

Unicycle from the video looks one male one female. Where were the photos?

Why is that hoop manipulation act using music from Kurios?

Most of these 45 Degrees shows use pre-recorded songs from previous Cirque shows. Many have mix-and-match costumes / characters too. This one looks a little more put together than most, but I've not heard anything about a composer for the show.
