Spoiler alert. "Volta, a young girl who is ignored and alienated by her parents, comes of age on a mystical island at the foot of a volcano, teeming with insect life. On her quest to "find her free" she explores the origins of human evolution in a colorful city where east meets west".

"She then meets a hunky male acrobat and the two of them have a sensual aerial strap duo act. The lovers must go through many trials and tribulations before declaring their ultimate love. At the end a huge celebration is held to commemorate the lovers' loving love because love is good. "

Any other Cirque cliche's I'm missing?

I wanted to express my opinion about the VOLTA press conference  meltdown a while ago but the site was down so sorry for being a little late. I saw a lot of hate at the Facebook group and I understand that everyone has their own opinions and it's ok but it pisses me off that y'all are judging VOLTA for three acts out of 10-12 it's not even half of the show!

If I were you I would wait and shut my mouth on irrelevant tantrums "Oh I hate the costume designer!" "The stage is horrible" and so on. I mean we Cirque Fans not long ago were complaining about how the shows had similar elements on them and now you're given something different and "refreshing" and all you do is complain.

The reason why this drove me mad was because some disrespectful fan commented on an artist's Instagram about VOLTA being the worst Cirque show which is completely unacceptable and rude. They are giving their 100% in order for this show to be ready and for you to like it. How would you feel if you were them?

So why not wait till premiere (or when you go see the show) to judge it?. We're so close to the opening night! 11 days!!!!

I agree and disagree with what I think are two separate issues you raise. I agree that judging the whole show with statements like "worst show ever" based on the small preview is too far and unexcusable when saying it directly to an artist regardless of if its true or not, thats just manners. BUT I disagree that you think fans can't critique cirque. Yes people said they wanted change from the stock standard shows they were pumping out, but that doesn't mean just becuase they do something different that it will necessarily work and that it will be compatible with everyones taste. Yes it is only 3-4 acts but they do give a feel for how they rest of the show will go (since each director/creative crew have a style) musically, costuming etc.

I never make general statments of the whole show so early on, because I agree we should wait and see until it premiers. That being siad, at the moment, the press release has me hating all the costumes I saw and I highly doubt that this will change because Zaldy Goco's style is an eyesore imo (not that I would even consider going on his instagram and criticise him, its just my observation which I limit to these discussion threads). The costumes are all too sequency, flashy, tacky, in-your-face and reminiscent of a 5 year old's collage for me. But the acrobatics and music are enjoyable and a pleasnat change from what I associate with cirque. Bar the costumes, I am actually getting a little excited about the show.

I don't think I could have said it any better, Tracker.

Color me unimpressed by VOLTA thus far. I think it gives too many WTF-type reactions, which is clouding my view of the show. Most of the turn-off right is in the costuming. I think they look hideous! I'm also not convinced why we need 2 bike acts in the show - and possibly more, as was pointed out, we've only seen 3 of the dozen or so acts in the show. There is some nifty jump work in the rope act, but, I'm not convinced we need another jump rope act. I would have rather seen the rings act, but we got what we got.

I'm keeping an open, but critical mind. That's just how I work. I want to see more. I want more details and much more information, but I'll have to wait until it premieres. Unfortunately I won't be seeing this show until much later in its run (gasp, first time missing a show in Montreal since Varekai!), but I have other considerations this year. ;)  Hopefully it'll all come together when we see it in context. I remember watching Varekai's press conference having the same reaction as I'm having now, so, personal opinions can change!

Tracker, I do think that we can criticise Cirque, only doing it in a constructive, not destructive way :)

I'm also not feeling so much the two bike acts in the show but overall I'm excited to see more! Also have you heard about the new lighting system that will lit the Grand Chapiteau? Now that's interesting!

Now, if memory suits me, One of the bike acts was a freestyle biking act, while the other bike act was a BMX biking act.

-------

For the first time in its history, the Cirque du Soleil leaves its traditional yellow and blue capital for a white and gray canvas. "The marquee will continually change color and shape," says Daniel Lamarre. It is a new lighting system that will be very spectacular. And it will allow us to celebrate events like St. Patrick's Day Green or Orange on Halloween. "

The marquee should benefit from this new lighting in late May or early June. "We had a little problem with our supplier," says the CEO.

But those critics are not new at all. Many fans always hate the new shows, but after they see it live, they ended loving it. Volta has a very refreshing air to me and Im pretty sure many teenagers and young people who were not interested in this kind of shows, will be now. Lets be honnest many of the fans here are not teens anymore. So I understand all this visuals, costumes and acts are not what they are used to see or what they spected, but come on, not everything is the old birds. I think Volta will be a good adition to the Cirque catalog. Lets wait and see what they have to show.

Thats exactly what the paragraph before the new lighting explanation indicates. (I am from Montreal and speak french).

Cirque is looking to rejuvinate and attract the attention of the younger crowd while pleasing/surprising everyone. "Make look younger(Modernize) the Circus(Cirque) and surprise the public"

Also, this article claims that this is the first time Cirque leaves the traditional blue and yellow chaptiteau, and this was quoted from Daniel Lamarre apparently. Luzia? European tour white big top? The Blue/Yellow swirl technically is not the traditional blue and yellow striped from back in the day, or current Kurios big top!

Kraze, you'll see a lot of poorly sourced information about cirque on the internet, just gotta turn a blind eye I guess! I saw one article that said something like "All of Cirque's touring shows like Quidam and O travel for 10 years under the big top before being converted into arena format for a further 5 years before being retired". Too many mistakes in that for me to bother correcting.

Volta looks like the Cirque du Soleil Version of the Disney Movie TRON. Even the Stage and Sets with the Lights look like the famous GRID from that movie. Even the costumes are similar to the ones in the movie with a slight difference that these one have a little bit of more color. So far I actually  like the vibe and style for this show and even the 30 seconds I listened from the Skipping Rope Act got my attention, I liked it a lot

The metallic costumes are really cool, so is the dirrection of the bmx bike act. The music and general concept of the reality tv show set for the stage and lighting though is god awful.

Loving the music for Aerial Lamp and Spanish Webs(?). When I heard the music was gonna be EDM, I was like Noooo!

For that Spanish Webs one, I hope that later in the act, more than those two guys get into it. Hope they're not see-sawing the whole time. And that act reminds me of the aerial silks act from La Nouba with the other guys moving those streamers(?) to different parts of the stage. :) From watching the video, the act looks great, but it just got too repetitive and looked like the two artists were just doing random sh*t.

And I hope they fix that BMX bike transition so that they're not taking 5+ minutes to set up the act. I think it would be cool to have Kurios' aerial bike during the BMX act. Aerial bike on its own makes no sense to me, lol.

The rotating ladder and lamp don't do much for me, they seem like dressed up apparatus of simpler things like Chinese pole or straps without adding anything that's new acrobatically. Things so far for Volta look ok, on par with Amaluna. Some of the story elements like rediscovering something lost in yourself or free spirited rebels wearing busy colors and stripes are already a bit tired. It's giving me fresh new appreciation for Luzia's low tech but high impact visuals and artistry.

from the instagram clips, what sums up what I saw is "missed potential". The artistic lamp and hair hang can have so much more beauty and spectacular acrobatic moments but all I saw was very low energy feat that didn't strike me as an act that only Cirque could have composed. Acrobatically they were boring, artistically they were flat. The ladders just made me want a good Chinese poles act and the weird vertical tug of war made me want a good Spanish web act. I do really like the aesthetic the set and lighting as well as the music. Hopefully the acrobatic elements will improve and evolve over time in which case Volta might become a very good show!
