Why is that necessarily bad?

It just so rarely works.

What is is with the constant screaming in the opening??? I HATE it! It's distracting, adds nothing to the act and hurts my ears. I get that they want to have appluase, but can't they do it in a less jarring way than having one artist with a particulraly irritating voice (*ahem* candidate 7 *ahem*) screeching away?

So he's just going to speak each country's main language in every one they visit?? I doubt that guy knows that many languages. Might as well keep it French for the whole run.

Well clearly they've found a way to get around that considering Toruk is gonna play Taipei and Japan (and I assume Latin America at some stage). If it's just a few lines of dialogue, they might actually learn the local language. one of the Saltimbanco artists learned the pre show dialogue "don't smoke, no photog, fire exits, thanks to the sponsors etc.) for their arena run. So they might do that again idk...

I feel like Kooza's unicycle act would fit in better than the pas de deux they have now.

Tracker, I agree about the screaming,

You know, I'm not half as turned off by the press conference as I thought I'd be. I'm gonna really try to keep an open mind here because although the costumes don't appear to be my taste so far, the music is better than I expected and several acts look deeply cool. Even the dialogue doesn't put me off just yet -- anyone who's seen Les 7 doigts de la main knows that dialogue can add immensely to a circus show, and just because Cirque doesn't do it often doesn't mean it never should. Being a Cirque skeptic has never done much for me except confirm suspicions about Toruk and Paramour (which were no-brainers) and make me roll my eyes at Kurios at first (which was turned out to be ridiculous on my part!). I'm down for different at this point. With the trimming and tweaking every new show gets, I think this could be something really neat by the time it gathers steam on tour.

Is it worth mentioning that the artists seem really excited? Maybe it's because Cirque's social media presence has exploded by like 5,000% compared to previous years, but many of the artists I follow seem really pumped up about this show and sharing it with the world. Maybe it's just because we now have a window into that perspective that it seems like such an obvious difference, but it's still nice to see their passion!

Rowelle, I'm not sure I agree about your Kooza statement (but of course, each to their own)... I found the unicycle in kooza to be one of the most boring acts I have ever seen (and it seems like whenever people talk about how good the act is, the main compliment is to the music and not the act itself). The unicycle is already a very limited use aparatus on a flat stage and especially when there's two people trying to do tricks together on it, theres just very little that can be done. I prefer a bicycle because like the style of Saltimbanco, there's a lot more tricks that can be done and the artist can focus more on tricks than trying to balance/stay up right which is the case of the unicycle. I'm sorry to those who love Kooza, but that act was a real bore for me.

The music for quid pro quo and the sound effects is piercing but all the other music I've heard has been really cool. Music for the guy on the bike climbing up the lifts sounded awesome and I love the Finnish singers voice and her playing violin on stage. She sounded just like Grimes during the hanging hair act and both singers sounded powerful during the duo Spanish web scene. The male singer has a career in drag before joining the cast so I was so excited thinking cirque was bringing that to the stage. I feel a bit let down that they didn't!

For those who don't like the bicycles... would inline skates make a difference? Or skateboarding? Both replacements mighe be cliche'd too, but, I dunno, they both sound more exciting to me than BMX again.

Have any of you seen some of the videos of the Rings act? That one looks awesome!

Still not digging most of the costumes. The music is good though. Can't wait for  CD.

It may just be the pictures but I was a little let down by the lighting considering the designer also worked on Luzia & Kurios.

Colton ,I agree with you the music during the bike and the lifts was mesmerizing, I saw another video and that act also features a high wire performer!

To break things down a bit - flatland BMX is the Japanese solo artist from La Nouba. He performs on a flat surface with the ballerina. Mountain bike is the guy who hops on the lifts (also a La Nouba act). Then there's the BMX team who do the final acts with the half pipes. It's a lot of bikes but I think knowing how to differentiate the talents makes it less of a flood. I love the character who roller blades. Been a long time since we've had a reccuring acrobatic character in a show (Like Batons from Zed) or even just strong dance characters like Target in Quidam. There's a lot of acts yet to see so I'm excited. I agree the lighting appears bad in a few acts. The harsh red and oranges wash out a lot of the colorful costumes. The stage sets are u.g.l.y.

Maybe we're supposed to find Quid Pro Quo over-commercialized and jarring because Waz is a very superficial, empty character at the start? I knew it stood out too much for a reason.

There's nothing left, there's nothing right, there's nothing wrong...

Colton, thank you for the distinctions!

NouvelleBaron: I'm thinking the same. It's supposed to be that way, but, it's still jarring. Will need to see the final product of course :)

Why is the massively hyped up "FIRST Teaser Trailer" the exact same as the one that has been out for months, still with no actual show footage???

I believe they re-upload trailers just so that people watch them again and they're aware of it. Since Volta is premiering real soon, they just re-uploaded that generic teaser for now just to remind people of the show.

Haven't you noticed that they reupload the same trailers of their other shows all the time as well?

Man, the costume prints and techniques are so intricate but the make up is barely there at all.

Light act drama surrounding the rope act in Volta. Apparently it looks suspiciously similar to another rope act staged by Rigolo Swiss Nouveau Cirque several years ago.

Rigolo act: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KcXJ2cjocg&feature=youtu.be

Cirque act: https://www.facebook.com/hamilton.cidade/videos/10155257432094459/

Cirque has had connections with Rigolo in the past - Lara Jacobs, a member of the Rigolo family and the Balance Goddess in Amaluna, developed her balance act with Rigolo first before bringing it to Cirque. The original creators of the Rigolo ropes act were also the original storm duo in Amaluna. However, Lara herself was the one to point out the similarity between the two acts on Facebook, going as far as to say, "They copied our work." Looking at the two acts, it's easy to say which is the more developed and compelling at this stage. I wonder what's more likely: that Lara would speak out of turn or without being fully informed about the business relationship, or that Cirque would look at the Rigolo act and lift the concept so directly. Interesting.

45 Degrees also used that act in Scalada Vision last year and I did not hear about any drama. Although I must say that Cirque didn't develop this time. Rigolo act looks way better than Volta and if they really stole their act without permission I will be deeply disapointed. I still believe in this show ):

Let's just agree that Kurios and Luzia are very tough acts to follow.

Cirque may not have lifted that act directly, but the pair they hired to perform may have. I guess we'll have to see how this shakes out - if it becomes anything at all.

It's also not surprising that there wasn't much said about the act's use in SCALADA last year. The 45 Degrees shows never really seem to get much play online. At least from what I've seen. Every time I turn around there's a new 45 Degrees show I haven't even heard of...

Now that I understand the context of the costumes with the characters that wear them, I like them a bit better.

I'm in love with the costume. I really like les Gris! I really feel a La Nouba vibe in Volta show..
